Evidence of alleged criminality in the past business dealings of Rangers FC's new owner has been uncovered by a BBC Scotland investigation.

It found that Craig Whyte was banned from being a director for seven years.

The BBC heard allegations that Mr Whyte controlled a company despite his ban, an offence which could incur a two-year jail term. It was later wound up after misleading potential shareholders.

Mr Whyte denied all the claims "in the strongest possible terms".

The 40-year-old businessman from Motherwell owns an 85% stake in Rangers.

Mr Whyte paid Sir David Murray £1 for the Glasgow club six months ago, and settled its £18m debt to Lloyds Banking Group.

Rangers: An Inside Story, which was broadcast on BBC1 Scotland at 19:00 on Thursday, heard allegations about the man who took over the 138-year-old club in May.

The BBC understands Mr Whyte was banned from acting as a director after the government began pursuing his company, Vital Holdings Ltd, for failing to produce satisfactory accounts.

The programme also uncovered evidence that HM Revenue and Customs was chasing some of Mr Whyte's companies for unpaid taxes.

The programme heard claims about Mr Whyte's involvement in a company called Re-tex Plastic Technology, during his ban.

Re-tex was wound up in 2003, after it offered to sell shares to the public using company statements which were said to contain false and misleading information.

The firm was investigated by the UK government's Insolvency Service - the agency that probes corrupt business practice.

Robert Burns, head of investigations at the agency, said: "We took the view that the company was being controlled, or certainly had the involvement of, an individual who was disqualified. That raised concerns."

'Be prosecuted'

When asked who that individual was, he said: "I'm talking about Craig Whyte, who had been disqualified as a director in June 2000, for seven years.

"We found a number of suggestions, and indeed evidence, that he was in some way, shape or form, behind the company. For example he was signatory to the bank account, he was giving instructions to certain payments.


Current Scottish champions Rangers have a 140-year history "In relation to his involvement in running the company then it is an offence and the individual can be prosecuted. Clearly there would have had to be a criminal investigation and a trial."

Responding to the claims, Mr Whyte's lawyers said he had a small investment in Re-tex, but was never a director or a de facto director.

Mr Burns told the BBC that his team had uncovered evidence that Mr Whyte had taken two sums of £100,000 from the company, apparently to pay a tax bill.

"There's no trace of the money being received by the Inland Revenue," Mr Burns said.

He told the programme that Mr Whyte had appointed fake auditors called Mullet and Co, which signed off misleading Re-tex accounts.

Mr Whyte's lawyers said their client had no control over Re-tex's bank account or finances and denied "in the strongest possible terms" withdrawing any money from the company accounts or appointing any auditors.

'Outsourcing services'

The Insolvency Service believes a convicted fraudster, Kevin Sykes, was one of the individuals behind Mullet and Co.

Mr Burns said: "We have investigated a number of companies which Kevin Sykes has been behind.

"We also know Mr Sykes because of a Serious Fraud Office investigation. In October 2004, he was convicted and received a sentence in total of eight years for his part in a theft from a pension fund which totalled £3m."


Mr Whyte lived in Monaco for several years This conviction came three years after Sykes' last known involvement with Craig Whyte.

The documentary reveals other previous links between Mr Whyte and Sykes, with the latter acting as secretary in four of Mr Whyte's companies which were dissolved in the late 1990s.

Mr Whyte moved to Monaco for several years around 2000, following his disqualification and the demise of 24 companies in which he was involved.

In March 2001, Sykes told his bankruptcy hearing at the High Court in London that he travelled to Monaco to be paid in cash by Mr Whyte for "outsourcing services".

Mr Whyte's lawyers said its client had never been a close business associate of Kevin Sykes, and denied paying him a retainer.

Rangers' finances have hit the headlines in recent months, after a judge ruled more than £3m of its assets should be frozen, pending further court action.

The Court of Session in Edinburgh heard that a disputed tax bill of up to £49m left the SPL champions at a "real and substantial risk of insolvency". The tax hearing is due to begin next month.

The documentary comes just days after Rangers announced it was withdrawing all co-operation with the BBC.

In a statement, Craig Whyte and Rangers FC said: "As a result of the BBC's approach, Mr Whyte and Rangers FC believe there is a strong risk that the programme will mislead and misinform viewers about matters concerning the club, and has suspended the BBC's access to the club.

"Mr Whyte and Rangers wish to reassure viewers - and those of the club's valued fans who may be watching - that the best interests and secure future of the club are and will remain their priority."

BBC Scotland Investigates - Rangers: The Inside Story was broadcast on BBC1 Scotland at 19:00 on Thursday 20 October, and will be available for a week on the iPlayer.

It's quite well reported around over Celtic sites that the huns stopped their players from going to the frontlines in ww2.

It's laughable listening to some of the Hun faithful trying to say that BBC has an anti-Rangers agenda because they aired that programme about Craig Whyte last night.

Some of these cunts are behaving like ostriches the way they are sticking their head in the sand and ignoring the real issues surrounding their club. Maybe convincing themselves that the BBC has an anti-Rangers agenda, rather than facing some of the not so flattering facts about their new owner, helps them to sleep at night.

They better take their head out the sand soon and face up to the fact that their club is headed for administration.

Cash row at Rangers as Kirk Broadfoot's agent claims Ibrox club owe him £100k

A FOOTBALL agent is at the centre of a cash row with Rangers over claims he is owed £100,000.

Graeme Rankin – who brokered Ibrox defender Kirk Broadfoot’s three-year deal in 2010 – says the SPL champs were due to pay him in July for contract negotiations.

But new Ibrox owner Craig Whyte has ordered a freeze on all deals struck with agents prior to his takeover in May.

Now Rankin has lodged a complaint with the Scottish Football Association, who are set to approach the club about why the cash has been withheld.

Pals say he fears Rangers will go bust before Whyte stumps up the cash.

One said: “Graeme is worried he will lose out on his money.

“Rangers’ financial problems are well documented and he fears that, if the club were to go into administration, he would never get paid.

“He doesn’t see any reason why Rangers should delay paying him.”

The cash row is the latest financial dispute to hit the club.

Earlier this month, former director Donald McIntyre won a legal bid to have £300,000 of Rangers’ assets frozen pending his breach of contract bid. He has been suspended from his £120,000-a-year role since Whyte took over from Sir David Murray in May.

The accountant claimed there was no basis for his suspension and his reputation had been damaged.

Former chief executive Martin Bain also got £480,000 of Rangers’ assets frozen in September.

He has launched a £1.3million claim against the club for breach of contract after he was removed from the board days after Whyte took over.

The cash was ring-fenced by Judge Lord Hodge amid fears the SPL champs could go bust if they lose a £49million dispute with the taxman.

A Rangers spokesman said: “The new management has been analysing and evaluating previous commitments made to players’ agents.

“This is to ensure the club is getting value for money.

“This process has resulted in a delay in some payments but, where commitments are found to be correct, they will be paid.”

Former Rangers director Donald McIntyre 'horrified' after court order results in seizure of league medals

MEDALS won by Rangers stars for winning the league have been seized under a court order.

The badges, worth almost £20,000, were grabbed by agents acting for the club's former finance director Donald McIntyre. He recently won a legal bid to freeze £300,000 of the Gers' assets as part of a breach of contract case.

Agents for McIntyre had targeted possible revenue from the Scottish Premier League owed to the club for television rights.

No TV funds are due at present but they uncovered the title medals in a box at the SPL's offices.

McIntyre was unaware of the move.

He is understood to have been horrified players were being denied their gongs for their third Premier League title in a row.

He has since ordered his team to "unfreeze" the medals.

A source said: "This court case has nothing to do with the players. It is down to a dispute with the owners."

McIntyre won his case at the Court of Session in Edinburgh this month when Lord Hodge ruled in his favour.

He resigned as a director after treating his contract as having been repudiated.

The same judge ordered the ring-fencing of £480,000 over a similar case brought by Rangers' former chief executive Martin Bain.

The court actions come after the club's ownership was taken over from Sir David Murray by businessman Craig Whyte.

Lord Hodge ruled in the arrestment proceedings brought by Mr Bain that there was "a real and substantial risk" of insolvency at Rangers following the major tax case the club faces.

Bain has raised a £1.3million claim for damages against Rangers over his contract.

Hm Revenue and Customs have had around £2.3million frozen in a tax dispute and the club also faces a disputed tax bill for up to £49million, which is under appeal.

STEVEN NAISMITH was given the news he has been dreading last night - that he will miss the rest of this season with a cruciate ligament injury.

The Rangers and Scotland star sustained the injury to his right knee in the Ibrox side's 2-1 triumph over Aberdeen on Saturday and a scan yesterday confirmed a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament.

The league leaders, who are nine points clear of Motherwell and 12 ahead of Celtic, today confirmed the hammer blow to Naismith, who is said to be "in bits" at the news.

Rangers said the striker will be sidelined for eight to nine months by the injury, which is almost identical to the one he sustained in his left knee in 2008 against St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

The 25-year-old was unable to return to training for eight months on that occasion and took time to nail down his place in the first team.

A similar rehabilitation timescale would mean the midfielder would not be back in training until the start of next term’s pre-season training programme.

Rangers boss Ally McCoist, while devastated by the loss of his star striker, believes that past experience can help Naismith overcome this latest blow.

He told his club's official website: "This is devastating news for Steven and our thoughts are with him. He was in the form of his life and it is a huge blow for him and the club that he is out for the rest of the season.

"He will get the best treatment possible in the weeks and months ahead and everyone at Rangers Football Club will support him during his rehabilitation period.

"Naisy has recovered from a serious knee injury before and he will come back again. He is a fighter and a popular member of the squad and we will all work hard to win games for him while he is out."

Naismith had been enjoying a sensational start to the campaign with his club and country before the injury at Pittodrie.

He has scored nine goals in 11 league appearances for Rangers this season and notched Scotland’s winner against Lithuania in the European Championship qualifier at Hampden back in September.

His loss will be a blow to Scotland boss Craig Levein, who admitted: “I really feel for him. He had a problem previously and missed a lot of matches with it.

“In the past couple of years he has got himself back in the Rangers team and has ultimately become a regular in the Scotland side. It’s a real blow for him.

“For Rangers and for the national team as well, his improvement in the past couple of years has been phenomenal.”

While the Naismith news comes as a crushing blow to Rangers manager Ally McCoist, two long-term injury victims will make their comebacks in a closed doors bounce game against Hibs at Murray Park today.

On-loan Arsenal defender Kyle Bartley and young striker Kane Hemmings hope to take massive steps towards first-team football by coming through the 90 minutes unscathed against the capital club.

Suffered cruciate damage to both knees now. Have to wonder whether or not the wee cunt will come back from this. He'll be one of the 1st out the door if they go into admin.
